Why SEO Alone Won’t Get You Conversions (Yet)
It’s a common misunderstanding: you invest in search engine optimization (SEO), expecting that more traffic will naturally lead to more clients or sales. But then the numbers roll in—and while your website traffic might be up, your conversions stay flat. What gives?
Here’s what you need to know: SEO is only the first step. It brings people to your site, but turning those visits into action requires matching their intent and guiding them with the right next step.
SEO Is Top-of-Funnel
Think of SEO as your digital front door. Basic SEO updates—like adding relevant keywords to your meta titles and body copy—help your pages rank in search results. But most of the time, the people who land on your site through organic search are just starting their journey. They’re gathering information, exploring options, or trying to better understand a topic.
That’s what we mean when we say SEO drives top-of-funnel traffic.
Traffic ≠ Conversions
SEO can increase your visibility and site visits—but more visitors don’t automatically mean more clients. That’s because not all traffic has the same intent, and not all landing pages are designed to convert that intent into action.
This is where many businesses get stuck. They see the clicks but not the outcomes, and they assume the SEO “isn’t working.” In reality, the disconnect is usually between the user’s intent and the page experience.
Match Intent to the Stage of the Funnel
To get real results from SEO, you need to understand why someone is searching and make sure your page meets them where they are. Here’s a simple breakdown:
1. Informational intent (Top-of-Funnel)
Searches like:
* “What birth control is right for me?”
* “How does the abortion pill work?”
These users are looking to learn. They’re not ready to book an appointment or make a purchase yet. So don’t push them toward a hard sell. Instead, offer helpful content and consider soft conversions like:
* Downloadable guides
* Email newsletter sign-ups
* Tools or assessments
2. Commercial intent (Middle/Bottom-of-Funnel)
Searches like:
* “Birth control near me”
* “Abortion clinic in [city]”
These users are closer to making a decision. Your landing pages should provide reassurance, make it easy to take action, and feature strong calls-to-action (CTAs) like:
* “Schedule an Appointment”
* “Call Now”
* “Chat with a Provider”

The Next Step: Track, Test, and Optimize
Once SEO updates are live, we monitor traffic to see which pages start performing better. From there:
* Pages that gain traction may need additional development to move users down the funnel.
* Pages that attract commercial-intent keywords should be optimized for conversion (this is called Conversion Rate Optimization, or CRO).
* Pages with informational traffic might benefit from content upgrades that include soft CTAs.
Final Thought
SEO opens the door. Your page has to close the deal.
